Walk No 4, 27th January Longshaw Estate, Joined by the BBC
Next walk, Date = 27th January, Start time = 9.30-10am, Location= National Trust Longshaw Estate.

Distance = Medium walk estimated 7 miles

Time = Estimated at 3 – 4 hours

Grade = Medium (A walk on stoney public footpaths but does include some steep inclines)

Longshaw Estate, Burbage Edge, Carl Wark, Grindleford cafe and Padley Gorge

We will be starting off at the Longshaw estate car park (the link below shows you how to get there) we will then make our way over to the bottom of Burbage edge. We then walk up the edge footpath about half way before dropping down to a small bridge to cross the stream. From here it’s a steepish incline, which can be quite boggy, up to the back of Carl Wark where if need be we can catch our breath. We may have to have the dogs on their leads through this section as there are sometimes sheep around. From Carl Wark we walk over the moor where we pick up the road, we do have a small section of road walking so dogs will need to be on the leads. After crossing the main road down to Hathersage we pick up a rough farm track that takes us down to the Grindleford station cafe where we can get some refreshment if required. After our refreshments stop we pick up the track at the bottom of Padley Gorge, this is an initial steep incline but after just a short distance changes to a gentle incline to the top of the Gorge. Once we reach the top of the gorge we cross the road in to the Longshaw estate, from here it’s a short walk through the estate back to the car park.

Notes:

As the weather has been so wet lately and the thawing of the snow some areas of the walk may become boggy so it’s essential correct footwear is warn as no one likes wet feet. Also as im sure you all know by now BBC radio 4 will be joining us to do a piece for their Ramblers radio program.

Car park fee £2 all day

Walk No 3, 13th December 9.45am Derwent Dam
Next walk, Date = 13th December, Start time = 9.45am, Location = Fairholmes car park derwent reservoir.

Distance = Medium walk 7 miles

Grade = Easy (A walk on stony tracks round the reservoir shores)

The Derwent Reservoirs,

IMPORTANT NOTE: We need to take a short bus ride to the start of this walk and it leaves Fairholmes car park at 10.05am so it’s essential that you get there in time. There are free car parking spaces on the way to Fairholmes if you wish to save some money. However the meet point is at Fairholmes catch the bus.

There is a slight difference to the start of this walk as it begins with a short bus ride. The bus will take us up to our start point which is Kings tree.
With reference to walk description there isn’t a lot to say as the walk is graded as easy, as it follows shore line paths round both Howden reservoir and Derwent reservoir. The reason for the choice of this walk is that it takes in some of the best scenery around the area and is voted one of the best routes around the low peak.
Along with this there is the history surrounding the dam busters training before the WWII attacks.
On return to the fairholmes information centre and car park we can grab a coffee before heading home.

Also as this is Christmas walk we thought a fancy dress theme for your dogs would be fun. This is not essential just a bit of Christmas sillyness

Notes:

Car park fee £2.50 for up to 4 hours, £3.50 all day
Bus Fair: 55p+dog

Walk No 2, 1st November walk
Next walk, Date = 1st November, Start time = 10am, Location = Baslow

Distance = Medium walk 4 – 7 miles

Grade = Medium (some uneven ground with steep inclines)

Chatsworth Round Walk,

From the main car park in Baslow, we follow the path along the river till you get to a gate that allows you in to the Chatsworth grounds. We then start to walk across the grounds up towards the wooded area above you. This pathway starts to get steeper the closer you get to the woods and towards the top of the grassed area the incline is quite steep. You enter the woods by climbing a stepped wall, where you then walk up a wooded path, this too is quite steep until you reach the road way at the top.

I will warn you that the start to this walk is a bit of a drag up, it will be hard work but it is worth doing it and we get all the uphill out of the way at the start. There is no need to worry time will be taken to complete this so it can be taken at your own pace.

Once we get up to the access road its a short walk to the hunting tower where we can have a well earned rest. Once we have all got our breath back we follow the access road through the upper grounds of Chatsworth. After a distance the road starts to wind back down where we will eventually come out by the farm/children’s playground entrance. From here we walk out in front of the house and cross over grassed area back towards the entrance gate.
Once through this we follow the pathway back to the car park and the finish.

Depending on if the livestock are grazing in the Chatsworth grounds; this walk allows the dogs to be off lead for long periods of time. However care must be taken by every owner to ensure no problems occur.
